Kirkintilloch rang out with the “sound of music” on April 23rd when Kirkintilloch  Ladies Choir celebrated its 50th anniversary. George Kirkpatrick introduced the concert and welcomed Nan Duncan, the choir’s founder who was in charge for 20 years and also Margaret Whitelaw who was the conductor for 22 years. Joining the ladies in St Mary’s Parish Church were the Kirkintilloch Male Voice Choir led by Sally McLellan and accompanied by David Burns and Kirkintilloch Kelvin Brass conducted by Charles Keenan. The varied programme began with KLC singing the very first piece the choir performed 50 years ago, Elgar’s Lullaby. The choir was conducted by Marion Donnachie and accompanied by Nancy Burns. Other pieces included Spring by Handel, You Raise Me Up, The Lord is my Shepherd  (form The Vicar of Dibley)  and O, My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose sung as a tribute to Kenneth McKellar who, for some time before his recent death, was a resident of Lenzie. The final section had a song from each decade finishing on a high note with the very fitting Thank you For the Music. The ladies were joined by KMVC for 2 pieces, one being the haunting Highland Cathedral arranged by Sally and David.  The gentlemen sang several pieces including Non Nobis Domine and I Dreamed a Dream.Kelvin Brass played a selection of pieces which included Elvis’s An American Trilogy and solo pieces. Charles Keenan also entertained the audience with light hearted banter and amusing tales.Jennifer Clark, president of the choir, in her closing remarks made a presentation to two ladies, Janet McDonald and Ann Cavin, to mark their involvement with the choir throughout the 50 years, a remarkable achievement. The audience left the church to go out into the cold, damp evening having enjoyed a feast of music complete with the knowledge that the future of singing and  music in Kirkintilloch is in safe hands.

The choir is looking to replace the concert dress. If you would like to help the choir in raising funds to enable the ladies to do this we have produced a “Scottish Place Names” quiz.

There will be a bottle of wine for the first three all-correct entries opened after the closing date, 31st August.

Copies of the quiz are available form choir members. Test your brains, put on your thinking-cap and have fun working out the answers. Who knows, you may be one of the lucky winners!

Good luck!!!
